Program HistoryThe David Scholar Program was established in 1980 by Paul David of Massillon, Ohio and his family. The purpose of the Program is to aid and assist qualified graduating high school students who, due to financial constraints, would find it difficult, if not impossible, to further their education at an accredited school. Paul was the 10th child in a family of 13 children. To say that Paul came from simple means would have been a substantial understatement but that never stopped him from achieving his goals. From the trunk of his 1956 Buick, he began to distribute phonograph records to any grocery and drug store in Ohio that would let him merchandise a rack in their store. After many grueling years of just getting by, Paul abandoned the wholesaling business and made a leap of faith into the retail business by opening stores of his own. This proved to be one of the most significant professional decisions of his life. As his music store chain (which eventually came to be known as Camelot Music) grew, so did Paul's desire to give back to the community that supported him during the 'tough times.' He did so by establishing this Scholarship Program to help kids 'just like him' to better themselves through education. At the time of Paul's passing in November 2002, the David Scholar Program had assisted over 200 students in the Stark County area and today, his family, continues his legacy of assisting the less fortunate in the Stark County community through the David Scholar Program.
